Welcome to my playground.

Greetings, readers of the Decaturian and The Dec Online! We here at the Decaturian greatly appreciate your reading and support, enough that we would spend countless hours writing and editing stories, designing layouts for print, and (in the case of myself and my assistant editor, Kerry) turning a biweekly newspaper into something that can be digested digitally for those too far to get a hold of our physical paper or too introverted to walk across Millikin’s campus to get one. (I know there’s got to be someone for whom that is true. This is college, after all.)

Many of you might have been perceptive enough to notice that we’re not in Kansas, er, on Millikin’s servers anymore. Good for you! Indeed, we no longer reside digitally on the Millikin campus; we have instead chosen a different path, one that is much more open (and green). And it is my honest opinion that it is the best move we have ever made with The Dec Online.

That could just be the five-year-old boy in me talking - after all, this move gave me access to a lot of nifty new toys. (Am I right, fellas?) There are things that I could do once we moved away from Millikin’s servers, encumbered by the limitations of HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Flash, only the first two of which we ever used on The Dec Online. Now we have PHP and MySQL in addition to those things, and so much more. It truly has been incredible.

And it has also been a learning experience for me, as I’m sure it will continue to be. We’ve come a long way, but there’s plenty more direction for us to take now.

So, in this blog, I will make a sincere effort to let everyone know what I’m doing. Unlike the five-year-old boy, there is great potential in these toys for connecting to other people and for disseminating information in the way that news media should on the Internet. This is for you, Millikin community (and other interested parties), and it’s your job to take advantage of it.

With that said, check back frequently. I will do my best to let you know what I’m toying with. Certainly, it has been quite interesting thus far.

Howdy,

This blog is a superb idea. You’re getting good at producing those–superb ideas, that is.

Anyway, I wanted to tell you something I noticed, something very minute–though it bothers me now that I’ve noticed it.

In the “declogo.png” image, the letter “R” of the word “FOR” has a gray background.

See how closely I’m watching the site!

All the best,

DTR

Curses, Dan Richards! I had to work with the image because the stupid IE6 computers in certain MU labs wouldn’t display the background transparently (I frankly don’t care how bad the grammar of that last phrase was), and apparently I didn’t work well enough with it. Now it bothers me!

Thanks for noticing that, though; I’ll fix it shortly. Hopefully others will follow your lead and complain about things here (at least then I’d know people are looking).
